Plastic vs. Metal Gears in Sewing Machines

If disassembled, the highest quality sewing machines on earth will all share one thing in common – NONE HAVE METAL GEARS!

Many sewing machine dealers claim that a certain brand they carry contains only metal gears. This is usually false, especially if they are selling a quality product!

In their infancy, plastic gears were not the greatest product. Most of the gears could be expected to fail after about 20 years.

Today’s gears are not the same. They are made of nylon, not the plastic/rubber composites of the past. This nylon material is considered a higher quality than metal and other materials.

Some of the benefits of high quality nylon gears include

*Noise Reduction*Shock Absorbsion*Vibration Dampening*Corrosion Resistance*Non-hygroscopic (No Swelling)*Light Weight *High Wear Resistance*Self Lubricating*Free of internal Stresses*Metal Core*Physical Properties and Dimensions are Stable in Varying Conditions
